Quick Draw

Maybe it's the sunsets, maybe it's the horses, but the beauty of the cowboy life finds a way to express  itself.  Joe Holley of the Houston Chronicle tells what one cowboy, Harold Bugbee, did to immortalize ranch life and forbidden love in the 1920's.

If you've considered putting a pond or lake on your ranch (or need to manage one ) there's a lot to consider.   According to fisheries biologist Bob Lusk "It’s really important to remember that when you create a lake, you are making decisions that will affect that piece of land for generations, and you need to be really careful about what you do.” (Information courtesy of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department © 2005, Larry D. Dodge)." If step one is building your lake, our friends at Vollmar Pond and Lake Management have some very useful information for you. Clink the link to read more...

Big Picture Ponies

The first movie, the first movie horse. (Photo: Eadweard Muybridge/Public Domain)
Driving down beautiful Texas back roads, meandering past pastures and that picturesque Lonestar landscape, I'm reminded of some of my favorite westerns.  I've always been fascinated by the horses and how well they perform.  Integral to any western, these horses and their trainers created scenes that took my breath away, broke my heart and then pieced it back together when the hero rode off into the sunset.  Eric Grundhauser tells us how these four legged actors are prepared for their roles.  Click the link to read more...

Ranch Reading (and watching)

Kicking your feet up on the back porch of your ranch not only needs a good whiskey, but a good book, too.

"The Son" by Austin's own Philip Meyer
is a lengthy epic of Texas proportions, perfect for weekend reading.

The book is also being turned into an AMC series set for release in 2017. This Texan is looking foward to seeing what Texas towns make it into the movie.

Home on the Range

Picture

You're not the only one looking for room to roam.  The American Bison once graced our country in numbers of almost 60 million.  When unregulated and  excessive hunting brought that number drastically down, some Texans took it upon themselvs to conserve this national symbol of the open range.  Acccording to Jose Musico of the Dallas Morning News, Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight opened thier ranch to save and preserve the bison a full century before the Endangered Species Act.  The official Texas bison herd is maintained in Caprock Canyon, north of Lubbock.  Maintaining a bison herd, for conservation and most recently ranching purposes, is unique compared to that of cattle or horse ranching.
Nourished Kitchen, most notably known for reviving traditional foods, vistited a commerical bison ranch...

The Texas Experience

Considering a move to ranch life in the great state of Texas? One way to experience the beauty and solitude of the Texas landscape is to visit a state park.  Many are former ranch tracts themselves, according to the Texas State Library, dontated in the early 1900's when the state's parks department was in it's infancy.
You can experience every type of landscape Texas has to offer; the Mountains of the Big Bend Ranch Park, the canyons of Palo Duro Canyon Park, and most recently, the presteen coast line of the Powderhorn Ranch.
The Nature Conservancy boasts that "
the Powderhorn Ranch is one of the largest remaining, undisturbed tracts of native coastal prairie habitats left in Texas."  This land is the newest Texas ranch turned state park set to open to the public in 2018.
Pam LeBlanc, of the Austin American Statesman, reported on the Texas Parks and Wildlife land aquisition and its value to Texas' cultural and ecological conservancy.
